Memorial Day is not a holiday for sales or the start of summer. It is a holiday to remember the sacrifices of service members such as Sergeant Joseph "Joey" Collette.
Memorial Day is a day of solemn remembrance. It is a time to pause and reflect upon the extraordinary sacrifice of those who have laid down their lives in service to our nation. Sadly, many companies view Memorial Day as a holiday for sales or the unofficial start to summer. This has diminished the sacred moment to honor heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice. We’ve made many friendships as advocates for active duty military families. Through these friendships we recently learned about Sergeant Joseph “Joey” Collette, a soldier who lost his life in combat while rendering aid to his special forces team leader.
Joey was more than a soldier; he was a dedicated father to four children, a beloved husband, a son, a friend, and an inspiration to many who knew him. Joey, a specialist in explosive ordnance disposal, tragically lost his life in Afghanistan. Joey died from injuries sustained from a gunshot wound while courageously helping his teammate who had stepped on an improvised explosive device. Those who knew him describe Joey as outgoing, humorous, and selfless; someone who brought light everywhere he went. Joey was described to us as “always the happiest guy in the room.” Joey’s legacy lives on powerfully through his family and the countless lives he touched.
Each Memorial Day, we are reminded of heroes like Joey who embody courage, honor, and sacrifice. Though we may need reminding, these heroes are never forgotten by their children. Through their families and future generations, heroes’ legacies will never disappear.
At Generations CryoVault, we understand the sacrifices made by our military families and the unique challenges they face, especially concerning family building and planning for the future. Our mission includes a deep commitment to supporting active-duty military personnel by preserving their opportunity to build families through fertility tissue storage, including sperm and oocyte preservation. We believe every service member deserves the peace of mind that their legacy, their hopes, and dreams for a family, can continue even amidst uncertainty and extreme personal risk.
This Memorial Day, we ask you to remember Sergeant Joseph Collette. To remember Joey. But, please also remember and reflect on the legacies left behind by all those who gave everything in service to our country. We commit ourselves not only to remembrance but to active support, ensuring that the option of building and sustaining legacies remains accessible to all military families.
